Position Summary: 

SEA is hiring a faculty member to instruct our “Oceanography” course for two sessions of the SEASCape summer program. SEASCape is an experiential/residential program, stationed on our Woods Hole campus, for rising high school juniors and seniors. The course focuses on exposing students to many topics in marine science such as ocean circulation, coastal ecosystems, climate change, marine biodiversity and more. The course includes time in the classroom (lectures, discussions, group projects etc), in the lab (STEM challenges, chemistry labs etc), and in the field (biological sampling, data collection, environmental observations etc). Students are also exposed to research happening within the nearby science hub of Woods Hole through lab tours, guest speakers, and hands-on demonstrations from local experts. The SEASCape Oceanography instructor plays a key role in developing the course curriculum and providing students with an enriching and educational experience during their time at SEA. They work closely with the Humanities faculty member (who teaches the “Oceans and Society” course), the Program Assistants, and the Director of Academic Programs. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Collaborate with the Humanities faculty to develop an ocean-focused curriculum for the two sessions of SEASCape 
  • Instruct daily classroom lessons, lab activities, and field excursions  
  • Work with SEA administrators to coordinate field trips and guest speakers that are relevant to the course objectives  
  • Work with the SEA Academics Department to measure student learning outcomes and overall program success  

Preferred Experience and Education: 

  • Experience teaching Oceanography, Marine Biology, and/or Environmental Science at the high school level 
  • Knowledge of the local region and coastal habitats of Cape Cod 
  • Experience teaching students of varied backgrounds and abilities  
  • Interest and experience in using inquiry-based and hands-on instructional strategies to convey scientific information in an engaging way 
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field. Preferred: Master’s Degree or PhD  
  • CORI check required. 
  • Valid driver’s license required. 

Schedule: 

  • There are 4 weeks of prep work where, in collaboration with the other faculty and the Director of Academic Programs, the Oceanographer develops curriculum, plans field trips and projects, and solidifies a teaching schedule. This will happen any time before June 24 (the first day of the first program). This can be done asynchronously and remotely.  
  • There are 6 weeks of teaching (session 1 is June 24 – July 12 and session 2 is July 22 – August 9).  
  • There is a one week break in between sessions (July 13-July 21). 

Salary and Benefits: 

This is a full-time, seasonal, non-benefit eligible position. Salary starts at $12,000 for the summer and is commensurate with experience and professional certifications. Housing and meals on SEA’s Woods Hole campus are provided, if desired.
