Stories at Sea

Welcome to Stories at SEA

Tune in to Stories at SEA to join students and crew from Sea Education Association who completed a 4,700 mile voyage, sailing from San Diego, CA to French Polynesia while conducting oceanographic research onboard.

Nora Jackson, host and producer of Stories at SEA, spoke to students underway about daily life on the ship, research projects, and why it’s meaningful to be studying the ocean.

Brighton Hedger, Jordan Eckstein, and Diego Fernandez manage deploying the CTD for one of the first deployments of the voyage.

ABOUT YOUR HOST

I’ve felt connected to SEA since high school when I completed a SEASCape program in 2016. The RA’s that summer told stories about their SEA trips and from then on, I knew I wanted to study abroad with SEA. In my junior year, I attended the shore component of the S291 Oceans and Climate program, but due to COVID-19, the sea component was canceled.

Thanks to SEA’s generous offer of a make-up trip for the S291 class, I was able to sail on the Robert C. Seamans this past fall with the S305 class. As an Earth and Oceanographic Science major and English minor at Bowdoin College, I have always been interested in ways I can combine my love of the ocean with my writing and communication skills. I came up with this podcast project prior to setting sail, conducted 40+ interviews onboard, and produced the project after returning home. My goal with the podcast is to showcase what life is like on a SEA voyage, discuss oceanography, and learn more about why the students onboard feel driven to study the ocean.
